Farewell to AFCON? Mohamed Salah's Injury Worse Than Expected
What initially seemed to be a minor muscular issue turned out, after tests conducted on the Egyptian, to be a setback that could potentially rule him out from playing in the tournament again, even if his team reaches the final.
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah will be sidelined for three to four weeks due to a hamstring tear.
The Egyptian sustained the injury in his national team's second match in the Africa Cup of Nations, and despite initially estimating his absence for only the next two games for Egypt, it has now been confirmed that the injury is worse than expected, and he may miss the remainder of the tournament.
"It is expected he will be back in three or four weeks if everything goes well. It will go well based on how he has treated his body before", said Pep Lijnders, Jürgen Klopp's assistant, who usually addresses the press ahead of League Cup matches, such as the one they will have on Wednesday against Fulham.
In a statement released on Monday, Liverpool confirmed that the injury is "worse than expected" and Salah will return to England on Wednesday to begin rehabilitation.
"Salah will immediately start working with the medical team with the goal of coming back as soon as possible and giving him the chance to compete again in the Africa Cup of Nations if Egypt continues to advance in the tournament", it noted.
With the final scheduled for February 11, it is unlikely that Salah will be back in time in the event Egypt reaches the last game.
