Egypt: The King Aiming To Reclaim Its Crown In AFCON 2023
The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 is about to take place, and among the many teams vying to be favorites for the coveted trophy, one stands out for its clear dominance in the competition: Egypt.
The Egyptian national team is the most successful in this tournament, having been crowned Africa's champion seven times, two more than its closest competitor, Cameroon (5).
The Pharaohs secured their first title in the inaugural edition of AFCON in 1957, defeating Ethiopia 4-0 in the final. The second star came two years later in the second edition, where they were hosts. Once again playing on home soil, they claimed their third star in 1986.
Finally, after their victory in the 1998 edition, a golden era for the Egyptians ensued when, in a span of four years, they won three more trophies (2006, 2008, 2010). Since that 2010 triumph, Egypt has been unable to reclaim its throne.
In the last edition of AFCON (held in Cameroon), Mohamed Salah's team came close to conquering the coveted cup. However, in the grand final, they fell in a penalty shootout against Sadio Mané's Senegal.
Now, in this new edition to be held in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, Egypt aims to make it clear to the African continent who the king is.
And, of course, you can enjoy Salah and company's journey exclusively on the screens of beIN SPORTS.
