AFCON 2023: Trezeguet Believes Egypt Has Everything to Extend Its Record
The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is about to take place, and among the many teams aiming to be favorites for the coveted trophy, one stands out for its clear dominance in the competition: Egypt.
Mohamed Trezeguet, a player for the Egyptian national team, thinks his team has all it takes to increase its winning record in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Trabzonspor midfielder stated, 'It's a tough group. It's not easy. All African teams are strong and have very good players. We will play every game as finals and see how they unfold. We came here with the goal of achieving a new title. Since our arrival, the whole team has a single goal: to be crowned champions.'
The Egyptian national team is the most successful in this tournament, having been crowned African champions seven times—two more than their closest competitor, Cameroon (5).
The Pharaohs secured their first title in the inaugural AFCON edition in 1957 by defeating Ethiopia 4-0 in the final. The second star came two years later in the second edition, where they were hosts. Once again hosting the tournament, they claimed their third title in 1986.
After their victory in the 1998 edition, a golden era for the Egyptians began as they clinched three more trophies in a four-year span (2006, 2008, 2010). Since 2010, Egypt has been unable to reclaim its throne.
In the last edition of AFCON held in Cameroon, Mohamed Salah's team came close to winning the coveted cup. However, in the grand final, they fell in a penalty shootout against Sadio Mané's Senegal.
Now, in this new edition taking place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11, Egypt will aim to assert its dominance and reaffirm its status as the king of African football.
