Nigeria secures its spot in the next round in the last Group A match in AFCON 2023, defeating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on a night where star Victor Osimhen failed to score despite numerous opportunities in front of the goal.
The first half was a feast of opportunities for both teams, with Chukweze's dribbles, crosses, and shots well denied by goalkeeper Jonas Mendes. However, Guinea-Bissau resisted the attacks from the 'Super Eagles' and tried to conclude their participation in AFCON 2023 with attacks generated by Dalcio and Famana Quizera.
Despite Guinea-Bissau's efforts, Nigeria's constant pressure led to a crucial error resulting in their defeat. An own goal by Opa Sangante in the 36’ minute, attempting to clear a Nigeria cross, ended up sending the ball into the back of the net.
The second half provided opportunities for both teams, especially Nigeria, seeking to secure their position in Group A and improve their goal difference. However, lapses in concentration prevented them from achieving their goals, as every apparent goal by Osimhen was ruled out by the referee.
With this result, Nigeria sits in the second spot in their group with a goal difference of two, just behind the surprising Equatorial Guinea, one of the standout revelations of AFCON 2023.
