Agnieszka Radwanska progressed to the second round of the Shenzen Open, while Petra Kvitova retired due to illness on Tuesday.
Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska advanced to the second round of the Shenzhen Open on Tuesday, as Petra Kvitova retired due to illness.
World number five Radwanska defeated Aleksandra Krunic 6-4 6-3 at the WTA International event, breaking the Serbian once in each set to win a tight encounter in one hour and five minutes.
Krunic, 108th in the rankings, valiantly saved three match points to hold serve in the penultimate game but could not prevent her Polish opponent from serving out the match.
Zheng Saisai received an unexpectedly easy passage into the next round when second seed Kvitova pulled out, having lost the first set of their match 6-2.
Eugenie Bouchard, seeded sixth, needed three sets to overcome Donna Vekic 6-4 1-6 7-5. The Canadian was broken in all four of her service games to lose the second set, but responded well in the third to avoid a surprise early exit.
Wang Qiang gave the home crowd something to cheer about, defeating fifth seed Johanna Konta 6-3 3-6 6-3.
Zhang Shuai also progressed, overcoming fellow wild card Irina Khromacheva 6-3 6-3, while Vania King defeated Stefanie Voegele 7-5 6-4.
There were also straight-sets wins for Nicole Gibbs and Anett Kontaveit over Tereza Smitkova and Yaroslava Shvedova respectively.
