Konta, Wickmayer prevail in tough first-round matches
Only one seed fell in the WTA Abierto Mexicano Telcel first round on Monday, but it was tough going for Johanna Konta and Yanina Wickmayer.
Johanna Konta got through a hard-fought first round at the WTA Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Monday as she overcame Anett Kontaveit 6-3 3-6 6-4.
The world number 26 lost a service game in the first set, but managed to break the unseeded Kontaveit twice in reply, before being broke twice herself in the second set.
The decider was equally well-fought, as both players continued to struggle on their serve.
Despite winning the final set 6-4, Konta was broken twice but managed to break Kontaveit three times on the way to victory and the next round.
Yanina Wickmayer survived a real scare against Mexican Victoria Rodriguez, as the eighth seed needed a tie-break in the third set to win through.
Wickmayer won 6-7 (5-7) 6-0 7-6 (7-2) as Rodriguez battled hard in front of her home crowd.
The unseeded Mexican was even serving for the match as she led 5-3 in the third, but failed to capitalise as Wickmayer cranked up the pressure and took the set to a tie-break before sealing the win.
Fifth seed Alison Van Uytvanck was not so lucky as she crashed out against Mariana Duque-Marino 4-6 6-4 6-4.
It was plain sailing for world number 59 Johanna Larsson, who cruised past qualifier Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-3, while third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova advanced when Urszula Radwanska retired hurt with the Russian leading 6-0 2-3.
Japanese wildcard Naomi Osaka defeated Kiki Bertens 6-4 6-2 to progress to the second round.
