Johnson seals first singles title in Nottingham
American Steve Johnson finally has a singles title to his name after seeing off Pablo Cuevas in only his second career ATP final.
Steve Johnson claimed his first ATP singles title with victory over Pablo Cuevas in the final of the Aegon Open on Saturday.
Having knocked out top seed Kevin Anderson en route to the final of the grass-court tournament, Johnson saw off second seed Cuevas in straight sets in Nottingham, winning 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.
Neither player faced a break point in the opening set but it was Johnson who proved the stronger in the tie-break, coming back from 3-1 down to prevail.
Another breaker seemingly beckoned in the second, Cuevas dropping serve in the third game only to level at 4-4 in spectacular fashion courtesy of a running backhand cross-court pass.
But the Uruguayan gave away his serve again, putting Johnson 6-5 ahead, and the American did not let the opportunity slip - sealing his triumph with a superb drop-volley.
