Halep hurdles Rogers with ease
Simona Halep's bid for a maiden US Open quarter-final remains on track after accounting for a local hope on Saturday.
Second seed Simona Halep cruised into the fourth round at the US Open with a 6-2 6-3 win over Shelby Rogers.
Halep kept her unforced errors low (nine) and converted five of eight break-point opportunities to overcome American Rogers in one hour, seven minutes, with the home favourite struggling to make an impact on her Romanian opponent's serve.
Rogers notched just one break for the match, while her 27 unforced errors gave Halep a relatively easy ride into the round of 16.
After reaching the French Open final and Wimbledon semi-finals last year, Halep has generally struggled at major tournaments in 2015 but continued her bid for a maiden quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows on Saturday.
The 23-year-old claimed the first break of the opening set in the fifth game, the second of a five-game winning run that saw her wrap up the set in just over half an hour.
Halep broke Rogers again to begin the second set and although she was unable to serve out the match at 5-3, Halep broke back immediately to wrap up victory.
In three matches in New York this week, Halep is yet to drop a set.
