Duan departs in Dalian, Wang advances
Three of the top six seeds have now suffered defeats in the first round of the Dalian Women's Tennis Open after Duan Ying-ying's exit.
Duan Ying-ying became the third seed to crash out of the Dalian Women's Tennis Open in the first round when she was beaten by Sara Sorribes Tormo on Wednesday.
Elizaveta Kulichkova and Kristyna Pliskova, seeded four and six respectively, fell at the first hurdle on day one of the second WTA 125K Series event of the season.
And Duan's hopes of a victory on home soil were ended a day later as the third seed went down 3-6 6-4 6-2 to 18-year-old Spaniard Sorribes Tormo in two hours and 24 minutes.
Sorribes Tormo broke Duan's serve eight times and despite failing to hold on six occasions herself, the teenager battled back to progress to the second round.
Fifth seed Wang Qiang also advanced courtesy of a Lu Jing-Jing 6-3 6-4 victory in an all-Chinese encounter with Lu Jing-king, while Zhu Lin, seeded eight, beat Misa Eguchi 6-0 7-5.
Wildcard Zhang Yuxuan saw off Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland in straight sets, while Wang Yafan, Yang Zhaoxuan and Julia Glushko were also first-round winners on day two.
