A new era is beginning for Portugal, but the captain's armband will remain in familiar hands.

Jorge Jesus will take charge of his first match as Portugal head coach on Thursday when the defending champions host Wales at the Estádio José Alvalade to begin a new edition of the UEFA Nations League.

And barring a last-minute surprise, Cristiano Ronaldo will be in the starting lineup.

"If nothing special happens today, Ronaldo will start tomorrow," Jesus said during his pre-match press conference.

The coach explained that Wednesday would be his first full training session on the pitch, as Tuesday's work was primarily focused on player recovery.

At 41, Cristiano remains one of Portugal's most important players, but his new coach wants to establish one condition from the very beginning.

Being a Legend Does Not Guarantee Him Every Game

Jesus acknowledged Cristiano Ronaldo's enormous importance to Portuguese soccer, but he also used the constant questions about his captain to explain how he intends to manage him.

For the coach, being the national team's biggest symbol does not mean having every minute guaranteed.

The message is consistent with what he said when announcing his first squad: names and reputations will not be placed above performance.

Cristiano himself appears to agree.

Ahead of the match against Wales, the forward said he shares his new coach's belief that status should not determine who plays and explained that he remains with the national team because he still feels capable of helping.

He also made his position on the future clear: when he feels he can no longer contribute, he will be the one to step aside.

For now, that moment still appears to be some distance away.

Jorge Jesus Wants Goals Before Taking Him Off

The clearest example of how Jesus intends to manage his captain came when he discussed how many minutes Cristiano could play against Wales.

The coach even joked about his ideal scenario for the opener.

"I hope he scores one or two goals, and then I'll take him off immediately," he said.

Behind the joke is a reality Portugal will have to manage during this new era: Cristiano Ronaldo remains decisive, but he is also 41 years old and the national team faces a demanding schedule.

After hosting Wales, Portugal will visit Norway on September 27 and Denmark on October 1 before facing Norway again on October 4 at the Estádio do Dragão.

Four matches in just 11 days.

Portugal Begins Its Title Defense

For Jesus, his debut will represent more than simply the beginning of a new project.

Portugal enters this edition of the Nations League as the defending champion, and the coach made it clear that the immediate objective is to retain the title.

The Portuguese manager took over the national team following Roberto Martínez's departure after the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will now have his first opportunity to begin implementing his ideas.

The core of the squad still features players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias and Cristiano Ronaldo, but a different era is beginning.

And Jesus' first message is already clear.

Cristiano will remain Portugal's captain, its symbol and, for now, its starting striker.

But not even one of the greatest players in soccer history will have his place guaranteed based solely on his name.
