Rangers' underwhelming Europa League campaign ended with a whimper as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away to Porto, who qualified automatically for the last 16. 

Danny Rohl's side had already been eliminated from the competition ahead of kick-off, and they could not end on a high despite taking the lead, as they finished 32nd in the table. 

Rangers stunned the Estadio Do Dragao into silence with just six minutes on the clock, as Findlay Curtis' teasing cross from the right was headed home by Djeidi Gassama. 

However, that was as good as it got for the visitors, who were pegged back in the 27th minute when Rodrigo Mora collected the ball inside the area before finishing neatly.

And two goals in the space of five minutes at the end of the first half put the game beyond Rangers, the first seeing Francisco Moura capitalise on a defensive mix-up between Jack Butland and James Tavernier. 

Porto then pulled further clear four minutes before the interval when Emmanuel Fernandez headed into his own net after misjudging William Gomes' teasing corner delivery. 

Pepe then curled over in the 78th minute and fired a tame effort at Butland soon afterwards, with Porto ultimately not needing a third goal as they cruised to victory.

After beating Ludogorets last time out, Rangers would have hoped to give their travelling supporters an outing to remember, but they were unable to build on Gassama's opening goal here. 

Indeed, Rangers have now lost six consecutive away European games (including qualifiers), their outright longest losing streak on the road in Europe.

They also shipped three first-half goals for only the second time in the Europa League (also three versus Lyon in October 2024) and just the eighth time in any major European competition. 

Porto, meanwhile, have now four consecutive home matches in major European competitions for the first time since another run of four victories between October 2018 and March 2019, in the Champions League.

And they were deserving of their win here. They finished the contest with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.72 from 12 shots, compared to Rangers' 0.43 from five attempts.
