Two Chelsea Fans Stabbed in Naples Ahead of Champions League Clash
An act of violence off the pitch has raised serious security concerns ahead of a major European night in Italy.
Violence Marks the Build-Up in Naples
Two Chelsea supporters were stabbed in Naples on the eve of Wednesday’s Champions League match, in an incident that has cast a shadow over the buildup to the European fixture. Both fans are reported to be out of danger and are receiving medical treatment.
The attack took place as the supporters were heading to a bar in the city, where they were allegedly chased by a large group of rival fans.
Chased and Attacked by a Large Group
According to British outlet The Sun, the two Chelsea fans were pursued by more than 20 opposing supporters before being assaulted with a knife.
Emergency services responded quickly, and both victims were taken to a nearby hospital, where they remain under observation. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
Chelsea Confirms Fans Are Out of Danger
Chelsea FC acknowledged the incident in an official statement, confirming the altercation occurred on Tuesday night in Naples.
“The club is aware of an incident involving two supporters last night. Both are currently being treated in hospital, and their injuries are not life-threatening,” the statement read.
Safety Advice Issued to Traveling Supporters
In light of the incident, the London club urged fans to remain vigilant during their stay and to follow the safety guidelines shared ahead of the match.
More than 2,000 Chelsea supporters are expected at Wednesday’s game at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Fans have been advised to avoid walking alone and to refrain from wearing clothing that clearly identifies them as Chelsea supporters.
