Sabah 1-2 Borussia Dortmund: Guirassy double sees off Champions League minnows

  • Serhou Guirassy was on point as Borussia Dortmund navigated a tricky test against Sabah in Baku on Tuesday.

Borussia Dortmund claimed a 2-1 win over Champions League minnows Sabah thanks to Serhou Guirassy's double.

Aden McCarthy gave Sabah hope of causing a huge upset in Baku, but BVB got the job done.

Niko Kovac demanded a response after last week's defeat to Bodo/Glimt, and Dortmund started well at Baki Olimpiya Stadionu.

The visitors went ahead in the 10th minute, with Guirassy on hand to tap home from close range after Stas Pokatilov parried Felix Nmecha's strike.

Pokatilov made a fine double save to deny Joey Veerman and Carney Chukwuemeka, and Sabah made their goalkeeper's work count.

Joy-Lance Mickels saw a goal disallowed for the tightest of offsides, but McCarthy restored parity when he headed in from Tymoteusz Puchacz's free-kick.

Veljko Simic forced Gregor Kobel into action, with Kaheem Parris also drawing a save out of the Dortmund shot-stopper before half-time.

Yet Dortmund restored their lead eight minutes into the second half. Veerman delivered a teasing cross, and Guirassy was on the spot to turn it in.

McCarthy made a fantastic block to deny Guirassy a hat-trick strike, but Sabah did not have it in them to fight back for a second time.

In Tuesday's other early kick-off, Slavia Prague recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Fenerbahce, with Pavel Kacor netting late on.

Guirassy closes in on Reus' record

Guirassy has now netted 21 goals in the Champions League for Dortmund.

He is the second player to net 20+ goals in the competition for BVB, after Marco Reus (24).

Guirassy has played 27 times in the Champions League for the club, meaning he has reached 20 goals in the second-fewest appearances for any German team, behind only Harry Kane for Bayern Munich (20 goals in 26 games).

In fact, Guirassy has scored 62% of all Champions League goals by Guinean players (23/37). Of nations with 5+ scorers, only Son Heung-min (66% of South Korea's goals, 19/29) and Robert Lewandowski (64% of Poland's goals, 109/171) have scored a higher share.

Dortmund have ended a run of four consecutive away Champions League defeats, with this their first away win in 364 days, since beating FC Copenhagen 4-2 in October 2025.

Sabah gave it their all, creating chances worth a respectable 1.46 expected goals, but BVB dominated in terms of opportunities, with their 22 shots (nine of which were on target) worth a combined 3.72 xG.
