Real Madrid Return to the Stadium Where They Lifted La Décima
The trip back to the Estádio da Luz is far more than just another away game for Real Madrid. It is the very ground where the club etched its name into history by winning La Décima.
A Return Filled With Memory and Ambition
Real Madrid broke with their usual routine and trained at the Estádio da Luz, the venue that will host their crucial clash against Benfica, a place packed with unforgettable memories for the club. On that same pitch, on May 24, 2014, Los Blancos lifted their tenth Champions League title, the first under Carlo Ancelotti, in one of the most iconic finals in European football history.
This time, the man in charge is Álvaro Arbeloa, who was part of that legendary squad and now returns as head coach. Alongside him is Dani Carvajal, the only remaining player from that team still wearing the famous white shirt. Thibaut Courtois is also part of the current squad, although his memories of that night are different, as he was guarding the goal for Atlético de Madrid back then.
Before the training session, Arbeloa gathered his players at midfield to deliver a speech full of meaning, aiming to channel the energy of the stadium into a focused and determined performance.
Arbeloa Breaks Routine to Inspire His Squad
Unlike the approach previously used by Xabi Alonso, who almost always preferred to train at Ciudad Real Madrid before Champions League fixtures, Arbeloa chose to travel to Lisbon early and prepare directly at the match venue.
“I wanted the players to feel the importance of this game and what these three points mean. This stadium brings us incredible memories, and it felt right to prepare here,” the coach explained.
The squad completed the session without major issues despite the absences of Éder Militao, Antonio Rüdiger, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Ferland Mendy. The big boost was the return of Aurélien Tchouaméni, back from suspension and expected to feature in midfield.
A Draw Worth Gold in the Champions League
From a competitive standpoint, the situation is straightforward. Real Madrid sit third in their group with 15 points and control their own destiny. A draw against Benfica will be enough to secure a direct place in the round of 16 and avoid the playoff round.
With a congested schedule and a demanding season ahead, sealing automatic qualification would give Arbeloa’s side valuable breathing room and allow them to better manage their workload.
