Manchester United Enter the Champions League With an Injury Crisis

  • The Red Devils return to Europe’s biggest competition under pressure and with a packed treatment room just when Michael Carrick desperately needs a victory.

An Injury Crisis at the Worst Possible Time

Manchester United’s return to the Champions League after two seasons away should be a reason for celebration at Old Trafford. Instead, the Red Devils enter Thursday’s opener against Sabah with a much more immediate concern: Michael Carrick’s squad has been severely affected by injuries.

Amad Diallo, Carlos Baleba, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Tom Heaton are all dealing with different physical issues, while Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw have also raised concerns in recent days. Carrick could have the latter two available, but the situation leaves the manager with significantly less room to maneuver as United begin another demanding European campaign.

The sporting context only adds to the pressure. United are coming off a 2-2 draw against Everton and have yet to fully convince during the opening weeks of the Premier League season. That means hosting Azerbaijani debutants Sabah represents much more than just a Champions League return: Carrick desperately needs a victory to restore confidence and ease the pressure surrounding his team.

Rashford and Shaw Offer Carrick Some Relief

Marcus Rashford’s situation raised alarms following the Everton match. The forward was forced off after 70 minutes after feeling some discomfort, although he subsequently returned to training and appears likely to be available in some capacity for the European opener.

There was also concern when Luke Shaw missed Wednesday’s training session. Carrick explained that the left back had simply been given an additional recovery day because of fatigue and was not dealing with a new injury. Shaw is expected to be available against Sabah, which would be particularly important given United’s limited alternatives in that position.

The news is considerably worse elsewhere in the treatment room. Amad Diallo and Carlos Baleba are still recovering from ankle injuries and have yet to play this season. De Ligt has been sidelined for around 10 months with a back problem and, although he has returned to training, his comeback will need to be carefully managed. Ugarte, who suffered a knee ligament injury during the World Cup, has no clear return date, while Heaton remains sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered during preseason.

A Favorable Opponent Only Increases the Pressure

On paper, Sabah look like the ideal opponent for Manchester United to regain some confidence. The Azerbaijani side will be playing their first-ever match in the Champions League league phase, and they must do so under the lights at Old Trafford against one of the competition’s most historic clubs.

That is precisely where the problem begins for Carrick. United enter as overwhelming favorites and anything other than a victory would turn a night designed to rebuild confidence into another major cause for concern. After an unconvincing start to the Premier League campaign, there would be little room to justify dropping points against the Azerbaijani debutants.

The manager must also decide how much he is willing to risk with players carrying fitness concerns. Using Rashford or Shaw could strengthen the starting XI, but another setback would only worsen an already difficult injury situation. Carrick needs to win, but he also needs to keep his treatment room from getting even more crowded.

Europe Could Become United’s Lifeline

The Champions League gives Manchester United an opportunity to quickly change the conversation. Their Premier League struggles can temporarily be pushed aside, and a convincing performance upon returning to Europe could restore some calm around a team desperately searching for positive results.

For Carrick, the match also represents an opportunity to prove that his squad still has enough depth to compete despite so many absences. Beating Sabah will not suddenly solve all of United’s problems, but a commanding victory could provide the first step toward rebuilding momentum.

The alternative would be far more concerning. Old Trafford has waited two seasons for the return of Champions League nights, and United simply cannot afford to turn what should be a special occasion into another night of frustration.

The Keys to Manchester United’s Injury Crisis

  • Carrick’s options have been severely reduced: Amad, Baleba, De Ligt, Ugarte and Heaton are all dealing with injury issues.
  • Rashford and Shaw could ease the emergency: both raised concerns in recent days but could be available for the European opener.
  • Carrick needs more than an encouraging performance: after an unconvincing start in the Premier League, three points are virtually a must.
  • Sabah increase the cost of any setback: the Azerbaijani debutants enter as clear underdogs, meaning a surprise at Old Trafford would only intensify the pressure surrounding Manchester United.
