Luis Enrique sends warning in Champions: PSG still sees itself as favorite
The draw against Newcastle hasn’t shaken confidence in Paris. Luis Enrique is clear: PSG sees itself as a top contender in Europe.
A clear message to Europe
After the draw with Newcastle United left Paris Saint-Germain outside the direct path to the round of 16, Luis Enrique expressed full confidence in his squad. The Spanish coach made it clear that, despite the playoffs, PSG remains one of the favorites to fight for the UEFA Champions League.
“I don’t see anyone more favored than us,” he said, downplaying the need for a playoff and emphasizing his team’s readiness to take the long road in the tournament.
Group context and the playoffs
Luis Enrique explained that finishing outside the top eight was always a possibility, particularly given Newcastle’s defensive strength and distinct style of play.
“We knew this could happen. They defend very well and play a completely different game. I have no complaints about my team,” he said, as PSG now waits to face either Monaco or Qarabag to secure a place in the round of 16.
Confidence despite recent results
Although PSG hasn’t won in its last three Champions League games—two draws and a loss—the coach dismissed any notion of a crisis. He also stressed that his side deserved more against the English side.
“We were slightly superior and deserved to win. Of course, we can play better and get better results, but we’re always ready to compete,” he said, highlighting the value of their performance against top-level opponents.
Decisions and squad updates
Regarding goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier’s benching, Luis Enrique was careful not to provide details, emphasizing that all players must stay ready at all times. He also gave a cautious update on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who left the pitch with an ankle issue. “It doesn’t look good, but I hope I’m wrong,” the coach commented.
With the playoffs looming and several questions unresolved, the message from Paris is clear: PSG does not feel at a disadvantage. For Luis Enrique, the team still has the quality and ambition to compete at the highest level in the Champions League, even taking the longer route.
