Iván Zamorano Says Lamine Yamal Isn’t Good Enough to Play for Real Madrid
Iván Zamorano sparked controversy by claiming Lamine Yamal lacks the “Madrid essence” to succeed at Real Madrid, while praising Pedri as the ideal fit for the Bernabéu.
Former Real Madrid striker Iván Zamorano has ignited a heated debate in Spanish football after stating that Lamine Yamal does not possess the qualities required to succeed in the capital. Although the young FC Barcelona star’s talent is undeniable, the Chilean believes his character and maturity level do not align with the standards expected at the Santiago Bernabéu. On the other hand, Zamorano had nothing but praise for Pedri, whom he considers a perfect signing for the Madrid giants.
Concerns Over Yamal’s Attitude
Speaking with Josep Pedrerol, Zamorano delivered his verdict without hesitation:
“I wouldn’t sign Lamine Yamal for Real Madrid. He’s a star, but he doesn’t embody the essence or soul of what a Madrid player should be.”
The former striker linked his criticism to recent off-field controversies involving the 18-year-old, including his Twitch comments before El Clásico, which reportedly upset several players in the Madrid dressing room. For Zamorano, those actions highlight a lack of discipline and understanding of what it means to compete at the highest level.
He emphasized that wearing the iconic white shirt requires respecting the club’s legacy of “class and culture,” noting that even during heated rivalry moments, legends like Lionel Messi avoided inflammatory remarks toward their greatest opponents.

Pedri Fits the Bernabéu Profile
The tone changed drastically when discussing Pedri, with Zamorano praising the Barcelona midfielder for both his mentality and composure:
“I would sign Pedri without a doubt. He’s a star, a phenomenon… and he doesn’t need to say a word. Humble and grounded.”
The Chilean also urged Barça to properly guide its young gem, warning that his development remains at a delicate stage. Beyond the football pitch, Lamine Yamal has faced increasing scrutiny due to persistent groin issues, a high-profile breakup and a post-Clásico confrontation with Dani Carvajal, all of which have intensified the spotlight on him.
As Hansi Flick works to manage external pressure and protect his squad in a crucial phase of the season, questions persist: Is Lamine Yamal a diamond still being polished, or simply not built for the emotional and cultural demands of Real Madrid?
