Ismail Kartal Resigns From Fenerbahçe After Champions League Draw With Roma, but President Won’t Let Him Leave

  • Ismail Kartal announced his resignation from Fenerbahçe after drawing with Roma in the Champions League, but president Aziz Yildirim said minutes later that the coach will remain in charge.

Ismail Kartal Announces His Resignation After Draw With Roma

Fenerbahçe endured a tense night following their return to the Champions League. The Turkish side drew 1-1 with Roma, but the biggest surprise came after the final whistle, when Ismail Kartal appeared at a press conference and announced that he was stepping down as head coach.

The 65-year-old manager said he had made the decision with the future of the club in mind and stated that he was leaving with the intention of never returning. His announcement caught the media by surprise, particularly after a match in which Fenerbahçe showed they could compete against a strong European opponent.

For Aziz Yildirim, Kartal Remains in Charge

I have left my position tonight,Kartal explained, while also saying that his departure was intended to clear the way for the club, his players and those who come after him. The coach’s statement appeared to signal the end of another spell in charge of Fenerbahçe. However, just minutes later, the situation took an unexpected turn.

As news of the resignation began to spread, Fenerbahçe president Aziz Yildirim appeared before the media with a completely different position. For the club’s president, Ismail Kartal remains the head coach.

Yildirim said he had spoken directly with the manager and argued that the resignation was largely connected to the pressure experienced during the match. The president also revealed an incident that may have worsened Kartal’s emotional state: a bottle was thrown at the coach’s head during the game.

He is upset about that,” Yildirim explained, adding that the manager had also told him he was feeling under pressure.

But the president went even further. Rather than describing a split, he insisted that Kartal remains in his position and that the club must support him during a difficult moment.

Fenerbahçe Faces Mounting Pressure

The club has finished second in the Turkish league for the past five seasons, a run that has increased expectations at an institution determined to reclaim the domestic title. At the same time, Fenerbahçe returned to the league phase of the Champions League after a lengthy absence, reaching this stage for the first time in 18 years.

The president also directly addressed the atmosphere of pressure surrounding the club. According to his comments, players and coaching staff are being affected by expectations and criticism on social media.

The tension extends beyond the pitch. During the transfer window, Fenerbahçe made several high-profile additions, including Mason Greenwood, Nathan Aké, Romelu Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi, moves that raised expectations surrounding the project even further.

A Night That Could Shape Fenerbahçe’s Season

For Kartal, the result could have been different despite the 1-1 draw with Roma. The coach felt his team had clear chances to win, although they ultimately had to settle for a draw on a night that was supposed to be celebrated as their return to Europe’s biggest club competition.

Even so, Aziz Yildirim’s position is that as long as he remains in charge of the club, Kartal will continue as the manager. The president framed the situation as a matter of internal trust and insisted that Fenerbahçe must remain united.
