Hjulmand: This is Leverkusen's way of playing football
Bayer Leverkusen secured their place in the Champions League play-off round in emphatic fashion, defeating Villarreal 3-0 at home.
Kasper Hjulmand believes Bayer Leverkusen showed "our way of playing football" in their 3-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League.
Malik Tillman scored a first-half brace before Alejandro Grimaldo got on the scoresheet after the break, seeing Leverkusen book their place in the play-off round.
It was Leverkusen's biggest win against a Spanish side in the Champions League since another 3-0 win against Real Madrid in September 2004.
Grimaldo, meanwhile, has scored six goals in the Champions League across the last two seasons, with only Lamine Yamal (eight) scoring more among Spanish players in the period.
Hjulmand was delighted with his side’s performance, in which they produced 1.9 expected goals (xG) to Villarreal's 0.3.
"We were very focused and had great control throughout, but also intensity going forward. That's our way of playing football," said Hjulmand.
"We've reached the play-off phase, which was a major interim goal this season."
Leverkusen recorded 43 touches in the opposition box to Villarreal's five, while also creating four big chances to their counterpart's 0.
Werkself skipper Robert Andrich was impressed with their relentless display against Villarreal, especially on the defensive end.
"We kept a clean sheet – that's always nice for us defenders," said Andrich.
"We were very quick out of the blocks, kept winning the ball and didn't let them get into dangerous situations. That's why it was a convincing win in the end."
