VIDEO | On This Day: Barcelona Most Tragic Champions League Night
The Sad Night Barcelona Lived through at Anfield on May 7th, 2019.
One of the most tragic nights for FC Barcelona happened on May 7th, but five years ago, back in that distant 2019 when an epic battle was unfolding on one of those special Champions League nights.
Barça, then under the guidance of Ernesto Valverde, faced Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool in a match that seemed like a formality after defeating the British team 3-0 in the first leg of the semifinals at Camp Nou stadium. However, the surprise awaiting Barcelona at Anfield was something even Lionel Messi hadn't anticipated.
In the return leg, Liverpool began bombarding Barcelona from the outset until Divock Origi netted the first goal in the 7th minute. Later, with the comeback in full swing and the score tied 3-3 on aggregate, 3-0 in the match, came a moment that would haunt all Barça fans.
A corner kick, a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold with all Barcelona players distracted, and a shot from a meter away from the goal, unchallenged, with Marc-André Ter Stegen confused by what was happening—Divock Origi sealed the deal, making it 4-0 in the match and 4-3 on aggregate, securing a historic victory for Liverpool.
