Galatasaray left it late to beat Gençlerbirliği 1-0 in the Turkish Süper Lig. An 88th-minute own goal decided the match and kept the Istanbul club top of the standings.
Galatasaray earned a hard-fought 1-0 away victory against Gençlerbirliği on Saturday, October 17, in Matchweek 8 of the 2026-27 Turkish Süper Lig. The decisive moment arrived in the 88th minute, when a late effort from Deniz Gül ended up in the net, with goalkeeper İrfan Can Eğribayat credited with an own goal.
The result gave Okan Buruk's side three valuable points after their midweek UEFA Champions League defeat against Barcelona, allowing Galatasaray to remain at the top of the league standings with 19 points.

Gençlerbirliği and Galatasaray Trade Chances
The match at Eryaman Stadium in Ankara started with both teams looking for an early breakthrough. Galatasaray threatened through Gabriel Sara, while Gençlerbirliği responded with dangerous attacks of their own.
The hosts came particularly close in the first half when Salih Uçan hit the post in the 36th minute. Gençlerbirliği continued to create opportunities, but Galatasaray goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır helped keep the score level.
At the other end, Victor Osimhen came close to opening the scoring with a header, only for Eğribayat to make an important save. The teams went into halftime with the score at 0-0.
Deniz Gül's Late Effort Settles the Match
The deadlock remained unbroken into the closing stages, with neither side able to convert its opportunities. Galatasaray introduced Deniz Gül in the 77th minute, and the substitute eventually played a decisive role.
In the 88th minute, Gül advanced into the penalty area and sent an effort toward goal. Eğribayat could not control the ball, which bounced toward the post and crossed the line to give Galatasaray a dramatic late lead.
The goal, recorded as an own goal by the Gençlerbirliği goalkeeper, proved to be the difference as Galatasaray held on for a 1-0 victory.
