Juventus Want to Offload Weston McKennie but He Blocks His Own Exit
Juventus are working to finalize the sale of Weston McKennie, but the American has halted negotiations due to a dispute over his agent’s commission, complicating the club’s transfer plans.
The Italian club is eager to sell the American midfielder this summer, but contract issues are delaying the transfer.
McKennie’s Future in Limbo
Weston McKennie, a key figure for the USMNT, is once again in the spotlight as Juventus attempt to offload the 26-year-old before his contract expires in 2025. Talks for a contract renewal have stalled, with the player's agent reportedly demanding a significant commission fee. This impasse is preventing the Serie A side from moving forward with other transfer targets as they restructure under Igor Tudor.
Despite renewing his contract in August 2024 to extend his stay and provide flexibility to the club, a new agreement seems unlikely. According to reports, Juventus are unwilling to risk losing the midfielder for free and are open to offers.
Roma and Milan Show Interest
McKennie has drawn interest from several clubs, including those in the Premier League and Italian rivals such as AS Roma and AC Milan. The latter could be an ideal destination, given Christian Pulisic’s presence and the potential departure of Yunus Musah.
Earlier this summer, Roma proposed a swap deal involving Lorenzo Pellegrini, but Juventus turned it down. A second option featuring Bryan Cristante was also discussed but has yet to materialize.
The club sees McKennie’s departure as essential to free up space in midfield and continue their pursuit of players like Jadon Sancho, while also managing their wage bill. However, unless the contract standoff is resolved, Juventus will struggle to make progress in the market.
Pressure Builds with World Cup in Sight
For McKennie, time is ticking. With the 2026 World Cup approaching, regular playing time is crucial. Staying at Juventus without a guaranteed role could hurt his chances with the national team. Meanwhile, his compatriot Timothy Weah is also seeking a move, with hopes of joining Olympique de Marseille, though competition for places complicates his future.
Unless negotiations resume, McKennie may face a transfer saga that extends until the final days of the window, adding uncertainty to both his and Juventus’ plans for the season ahead.
