Who Is Paulo Fonseca? Sporting CP's New Coach Faces Three Major Challenges
Sporting CP have turned to Paulo Fonseca to get their season back on track. The Portuguese coach arrives from Lyon on a deal running until 2030, inheriting a team performing well in the Champions League but trailing Porto and Benfica in the domestic title race.
After 11 years away from Portuguese football, Paulo Fonseca is coming home.
Sporting CP announced his appointment on Wednesday following the dismissal of Rui Borges, bringing the former Lyon manager back to a league he knows well.
Fonseca has signed a contract until 2030, with Sporting agreeing to pay €5 million to Lyon for his release, according to information submitted to Portugal's Securities Market Commission (CMVM).
He arrives at an interesting moment for the Lisbon club. Sporting remain firmly in contention in European competition and have reached the Portuguese League Cup semifinals, yet their domestic campaign has left them playing catch-up.
Who Is Paulo Fonseca and Which Clubs Has He Managed?
Fonseca built his reputation in Portuguese football, with spells at Paços de Ferreira, Braga and Porto.
He won the Portuguese Cup with Braga and previously experienced the demands of managing one of Portugal's traditional big three at Porto.
His most successful period, however, came abroad.
Between 2016 and 2019, Fonseca guided Shakhtar Donetsk to three Ukrainian league titles, three domestic cups and one Ukrainian Super Cup.
His connection to Ukraine later took on a deeply personal dimension. When Russia's invasion began, Fonseca and his family were forced to shelter in a bunker before eventually fleeing the country.
His coaching career also took him to Roma, Lille, AC Milan and Lyon, giving him experience across several of Europe's major leagues.

First Challenge: Close the Nine-Point Gap to Porto
Sporting's position in Liga Portugal may be Fonseca's most pressing concern.
That leaves Sporting four points behind Benfica and nine adrift of Porto.
Second Challenge: Keep Sporting on Course in the Champions League
Sporting's European campaign offers a more encouraging starting point.
The Portuguese side have won three of their opening four Champions League matches, losing only once, and remain in contention for direct qualification to the round of 16.
Their latest result was a victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, the club where Fonseca enjoyed the greatest success of his coaching career.
For the new manager, the challenge will be to preserve that momentum.
Third Challenge: Pursue the Portuguese League Cup Title
Sporting also remain in contention for the Portuguese League Cup (Taça da Liga).
The Lisbon side recently defeated Marítimo 2-1 in the quarterfinals, securing a place in the semifinals.
The competition offers Fonseca an opportunity to pursue a domestic trophy during his first season in charge.
Three Challenges Awaiting Paulo Fonseca at Sporting CP
- Get back into the Liga Portugal title race: Sporting sit third with 21 points, four behind Benfica and nine behind Porto.
- Pursue direct Champions League qualification: Sporting have three wins and one defeat after four matches, including a recent victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.
- Compete for the Portuguese League Cup: A 2-1 quarterfinal victory over Marítimo has taken Sporting into the semifinals.
