'Not losing is not enough' – Benfica goalkeeper Trubin not celebrating undefeated season
Benfica completed an undefeated Primeira Liga campaign in 2025-26, but still finished eight points behind champions Porto in third.
Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin insists they will not celebrate their undefeated Primeira Liga campaign after finishing third.
Jose Mourinho's side completed an unbeaten league campaign, winning 23 and drawing 11 of their games, but still finished eight points behind champions Porto and two behind Sporting CP.
Benfica navigated an entire Primeira Liga campaign without suffering a defeat for the first time since 1977-78, when they also failed to win the title, finishing second behind Porto.
Benfica missed out on Champions League qualification due to their third-place finish, and Trubin believes they must improve to match the desires of the club.
"Not losing and winning are two different things," Trubin told Sky Sports.
"Not losing is not enough for a huge club like Benfica. Our fans do not accept any other result than winning and being in first place.
"We need to be much better."
Mourinho returned to Benfica in September, 25 years after his first spell with the Portuguese club.
The 63-year-old won 20 of his 30 league games in 2025-26 with Benfica (D10), while also guiding them to the play-off round of the Champions League, where they were knocked out by Real Madrid.
Mourinho is reportedly on his way to joining Real Madrid this summer, but Trubin has enjoyed his time with the Portuguese coach.
"I am very lucky to have had the chance to work with one of the best coaches in history," added Trubin.
"I really like that he does not talk too much but knows exactly what he needs to say to every player at every moment. Just a few sentences, right to the point.
"That I need to communicate more, demand more from the team. He told me that I see a lot, but I am the kind of person who keeps things inside.
"He wants me to organise the defence better. And I agree with him. It is not just about my skills on the pitch."
