Boavista Avoids Collapse While Bordeaux Remains in Crisis
Portuguese side Boavista has avoided shutting down after a successful crowdfunding campaign, while French giants Bordeaux remain in serious financial trouble. Both clubs share the same owner: Gerard López.
Boavista, one of Portugal's most historic football clubs, has secured its immediate future after supporters successfully raised more than €50,000 through a crowdfunding campaign, allowing the club to avoid ceasing operations before the July 31 deadline and officially register for regional competition.
The Porto-based club, which famously won the Portuguese league title in 2001 by breaking the long-standing dominance of Benfica, Porto, and Sporting CP, had been facing one of the darkest periods in its history. Burdened by debts exceeding €150 million, Boavista had suffered relegation to Portugal's fifth tier and even faced the possibility of losing its stadium.
Boavista's relief comes as another historic club, Girondins de Bordeaux, continues to battle for survival. The six-time French champions and 1996 UEFA Cup finalists have been relegated to France's sixth division following ongoing financial problems and still face the real possibility of disappearing altogether.
The two clubs are linked by the same figure: businessman Gerard López. The Luxembourg-born Spanish entrepreneur owns both Boavista and Bordeaux and has once again come under scrutiny as two of his football projects have spiraled into severe financial crises.
López previously enjoyed sporting success with Lille, leading the French club to the Ligue 1 title in 2021 before departing amid significant financial concerns. He also owned Belgian club Royal Excel Mouscron, which ultimately declared bankruptcy and ceased operations in 2022 after more than a century of history.
While Boavista can celebrate surviving thanks to the support of its fans, Bordeaux's future remains uncertain, further intensifying questions surrounding Gerard López's stewardship of several historic European football clubs.
