Michael Carrick will be the chosen one to take the reins of Manchester United
Michael Carrick will be the new interim manager of Manchester United until the end of the season. The club has ruled out the return of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and is placing its trust in the former midfielder to lead the team
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Michael Carrick for him to take over as interim first-team manager until the end of the 2025–26 season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also among the club’s options, but the Norwegian will not return to the Old Trafford bench
Carrick is set to make his managerial debut this Saturday when United face Manchester City in a new Premier League derby. According to The Athletic, the agreement with the former midfielder is nearly finalized and includes the addition of several trusted staff members, with only the final contractual details remaining to be completed
The club is confident that everything will be signed in time for Carrick to prepare the team as best as possible ahead of a crucial clash against their city rivals. At 44 years old, the former United player has edged out Solskjaer, the 1999 Treble winner, in the race for the manager’s seat.
The board held face-to-face meetings with two managers who know what it takes to win the Premier League. Ultimately, the choice of Carrick was backed by the club's co-owner and head of INEOS, Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
In this way, United finds a temporary solution following the dismissal of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim on January 5th. Until now, Darren Fletcher, who had been promoted from the Under-18 team, had been in charge of managing the first team on an interim basis
