Guardiola: Man City players must not think they are 'special' after cup double
Manchester City won the FA Cup at the weekend, but they must beat Bournemouth on Tuesday to stay alive in the Premier League title race.
Pep Guardiola believes his Manchester City players will not win the Premier League if they start to believe they are "special".
City won the FA Cup on Saturday, defeating Chelsea 1-0 in the final, keeping their hopes of a domestic treble alive.
The Citizens won the EFL Cup in March, while they are five points behind Arsenal in the Premier League with a game in hand.
After the Gunners' nail-biting 1-0 win against Burnley on Monday, City must win against Bournemouth on Tuesday to stay in the title race.
Monday also saw the emergence of widespread reports suggesting Guardiola will call time on his glittering 10-year stint with City after Sunday's Premier League finale, at home to Aston Villa.
And if City are to provide their legendary head coach with a 21st trophy to cap his reign, they must remain grounded after their cup successes.
That was the gist of Guardiola's pre-match message, which came prior to the reports of his potential exit coming to light.
"You start to believe that you are special, you will just win the FA Cup," Guardiola told reporters earlier on Monday.
"Special we are not. The moment that we think [that], we will not be in these places.
"Quite often, that is one of the things that through the years, we were okay with, and we know how difficult it is just to arrive and then win it.
"All we want is to be with our people at the end and try to fight for the title and extend it to Aston Villa. To do that, we need to beat Bournemouth."
Bournemouth, meanwhile, are unbeaten in their last 16 Premier League games (W8 D8), the longest run of any side in the competition this season.
The Cherries have won four of their last five, as many as they had in their previous 22 combined (D12 L6).
A draw against City will secure Bournemouth's place in next season's Europa League, and Andoni Iraola is relishing the chance to lead them to Europe before he departs.
"We are close, but we still don't have it," said Iraola ahead of his final home game in charge of Bournemouth. "We need one more point, but it won't be easy.
"[Manchester] City are in good form after a trophy. They are also fighting for the league but we are ready.
"We are in a good place, we don't have injuries. We are looking forward to the game."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Bournemouth – Rayan
Rayan has scored On each of his last three Premier League appearances.
The only teenagers to score in four in a row are Robbie Fowler (three runs between 1994-1995), Nicolas Anelka (two runs between 1998-1999) and Francis Jeffers (August-September 2000).
Manchester City – Erling Haaland
Haaland has been involved in 15 goals away from home in the Premier League this season (11 goals, four assists).
The only City player with more on the road in a single campaign is Sergio Aguero (19 in 2014-15, 17 in 2016-17).
MATCH PREDICTION – MANCHESTER CITY WIN
City’s 94.1% win rate against Bournemouth is the highest of any side against another in Premier League history (minimum 10 games – W16 D0 L1).
However, City's only defeat to Bournemouth in the top flight came in this exact fixture last season, when the Cherries triumphed 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium.
City have also lost three of their last four Premier League away games against sides from the south coast (D1), as many as they had in their previous 24 visits to Bournemouth, Brighton and Southampton (W18 D3).
Nevertheless, City have only lost their final away league game in two of the last 16 seasons (W11 D3), though these defeats have come in the last five campaigns at Brighton (2020-21) and Brentford (2022-23).
Bournemouth have lost their final home league game in four of the last six seasons (W2), but they did beat Leicester City 2-0 last season.
