Chelsea Appoint Xabi Alonso After Disappointing Real Madrid Spell
Chelsea officially announced the arrival of Xabi Alonso as their new manager on a four-year deal, betting on the Spanish coach after his difficult exit from Real Madrid.
Chelsea officially confirmed the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach on a four-year contract. The Spanish manager will officially take charge on July 1, becoming the fifth permanent manager appointed by American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital since purchasing the club in 2022.
Alonso’s arrival comes only months after his turbulent departure from Real Madrid. The former midfielder lasted just eight months in charge of the Spanish giants before leaving the role in January 2026 following a series of poor results and growing reports of dressing room issues inside the club.
Despite his difficult spell at the Santiago Bernabéu, Chelsea still views Alonso as one of the most promising figures among Europe’s new generation of managers. His strong reputation remains largely built on his historic work at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German side to a Bundesliga title and an unbeaten 2023-24 campaign.
“From my conversations with the ownership group and the sporting leadership, it is clear that we share the same ambition. We want to build a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level and fighting for titles,” Alonso said in Chelsea’s official statement.
The Spaniard replaces Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed last month after an inconsistent campaign that increased frustration among Chelsea supporters. The defeat against Manchester City in the FA Cup final ultimately sealed a disappointing season for the Blues, who could also miss out on European competitions next season.
Chelsea’s sporting struggles sharply contrast with the massive financial investment made by the ownership since 2022. According to reports from English media, the club has spent nearly $2.5 billion on transfers, mainly focusing on signing young talents on long-term contracts.
However, the club’s financial situation remains concerning. The latest financial reports revealed losses of nearly $350 million before taxes, marking one of the worst financial records in modern Premier League history.
Now, Xabi Alonso faces a huge challenge: rebuilding Chelsea’s sporting stability, restoring the club’s competitive identity, and bringing the London side back among Europe’s elite.
