Brobbey extends Sunderland deal until 2031

  • After helping Sunderland qualify for European football, Brian Brobbey has extended his stay at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland have announced striker Brian Brobbey has signed a new long-term contract.

The 24-year-old's previous deal was set to expire in June 2029, but he will now remain at the Stadium of Light until the summer of 2031.

Brobbey joined the Black Cats following their promotion to the Premier League last summer, scoring 10 goals in 40 appearances since.

Seven of those goals came in 2025-26 as Sunderland pulled off an impressive campaign to qualify for this season's Europa League, where they have made an unbeaten start after three games (W2 D1).

All three of Brobbey's goals this term came against Manchester City in a 5-3 Premier League defeat, seeing him become the first Sunderland player to score a hat-trick in the competition since Jermain Defoe in 2016.

Brobbey also became just the fourth player in Premier League history to score a hat-trick against the side starting the day top of the table, after Robbie Fowler v Aston Villa in November 1998, Dirk Kuyt v Manchester United in March 2011, and Romelu Lukaku v United in May 2013.

"I'm really happy with the confidence the club has shown in me. Since I arrived, I've felt the ambition here, and I want to keep growing and improving as a player," Brobbey told the club website.

"Representing Sunderland in the Premier League is both an honour and a privilege.

"Having played my part in helping this club qualify for European competition is something I'm incredibly proud of. It’s an achievement that will always be part of the club’s history.

"I know I still can be a better version of myself, and that's what motivates me every day. I want to score goals, help the team and give our fans something to be proud of."
