Aston Villa Sign João Gomes from Wolves
Unai Emery's Aston Villa have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder João Gomes from Wolverhampton for €40 million, ending Atlético Madrid's long-standing interest in the 25-year-old.
Aston Villa have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Brazilian international João Gomes from Wolverhampton in a deal worth €40 million. The 25-year-old has signed a contract running until 2031, becoming one of Unai Emery's marquee additions ahead of the new campaign.
Gomes had been on Atlético Madrid's radar for several months as Diego Simeone searched for a defensive-minded midfielder. However, the Spanish club never completed a deal, allowing Aston Villa to move quickly and secure the Brazilian's signature.
The midfielder joined Wolves from Flamengo in 2023 for €18.7 million and quickly established himself as one of the club's standout performers. His consistent displays attracted interest from several European sides before Villa finalized the transfer.
João Gomes is Aston Villa's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for €60 million and Modou Kéba Cissé from LASK Linz for €5.5 million.
Wolverhampton sporting director Matt Jackson praised Gomes for his professionalism and commitment, admitting the club is disappointed to lose him but emphasizing that the transfer reflects the financial realities facing the club following its relegation to the Championship.
