Premier League Admits Granting Penalty to Man City
An independent panel of the Premier League has determined that the first penalty awarded to Manchester City in their 5-1 victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers should not have been given and deemed it as a mistake by the field referee.
This panel, composed of three former players or coaches, a representative from the Premier League, and a member of the Premier League referees' body (PGMOL), decided by a vote of three to two that the penalty
committed by Rayan Ait-Nouri on Josko Gvardiol in the 11th minute of the match, with the score at 0-0, should not have been awarded.
However, the same panel unanimously agreed (5-0) that the VAR referee did the right thing by not intervening and overturning the referee's decision as it was not deemed a clear and obvious error.
This independent panel is responsible for reviewing the most significant decisions of the matches each matchday, and these decisions are made public to provide more clarity and transparency to the game.
City defeated Wolves 5-1, with four goals from Erling Haaland and one from Julián Álvarez, to be second in the Premier League with three matchdays remaining, trailing Arsenal by one point but with one game in hand.
