Liverpool's Premier League Title Celebration Literally Shook the Earth, Study Finds
The city of Liverpool didn’t just explode in joy after Liverpool FC clinched the 2024/25 Premier League title — it also trembled. According to a study conducted by the University of Liverpool, the celebration at Anfield during the final match produced minor seismic activity, with crowd reactions powerful enough to register on the Richter scale.
Mac Allister’s Goal Was the Most “Seismic”
The largest tremor occurred after Alexis Mac Allister scored the goal that gave Liverpool a 2-1 lead, essentially sealing the title. The moment generated a 1.74 magnitude reading — the highest recorded during the game.
“The goals and the passion of Liverpool’s fans literally caused the ground to move,”
explained Ben Edwards, one of the lead researchers.
“Their enthusiasm was enough to shake the earth.”
Other goals also triggered measurable seismic reactions:
- Mohamed Salah’s goal : 1.6
- Destiny Udogie’s own goal : 1.35
- Cody Gakpo’s goal : 1.03
- Luis Díaz’s disallowed goal : 0.64, despite being initially ruled out
A Symbolic Phenomenon of Collective Euphoria
Though the tremors weren’t physically felt inside the stadium, researchers describe them as symbolic markers of the emotional force behind Liverpool’s triumph.
“Every cheer, every celebration leaves a mark beneath our feet — a seismic trace of collective euphoria that will remain in the Earth's memory long after the final whistle,”
said Farnaz Kamranzad, another member of the research team.
