Rayan Cherki shines in the Champions League and earns high praise from Enzo Maresca. However, the manager also identified a key detail to unlock his full potential at Manchester City.
Rayan Cherki once again showcased his talent with Manchester City during their 5-1 thrashing of AEK Athens in the Champions League. The Frenchman scored a spectacular goal and demonstrated the creativity that makes him a threat whenever he finds space near the box.
His performance came after a difficult week marked by his struggles against Paris Saint-Germain and his absence from the victory over Ipswich. The contrast once again put the spotlight on his ability to make a difference and find consistency within the team.
Enzo Maresca ranks Cherki among Europe's best
Following his European display, Enzo Maresca had plenty of praise for the attacker. The manager stated that Cherki is “one of the best players in Europe” when he is in the right position.
Maresca explained that the Frenchman is particularly dangerous when he receives the ball between the lines, where he can turn, create opportunities, and use his quality near the box. He also compared Cherki's recent goal against AEK Athens to the one he scored against Liverpool, highlighting his ability to produce decisive moments.
The tactical challenge of maximizing his talent
The manager also acknowledged that Cherki loves having the ball and constantly moving around. While this tendency fuels his creativity, it can also take him away from the areas where he can cause the most damage. For that reason, Manchester City's challenge is to find the right balance without limiting his freedom to improvise.
Maresca does not want to take away his playing style, but rather help him make better decisions about when to get involved and when to hold his position. If Cherki can receive the ball between the lines more consistently, he will be able to influence the attack without compromising the team's overall structure.
Cherki looks to establish himself at Manchester City
The numbers support the attacker's strong start to the season, with six goals and two assists in his first 11 appearances across all competitions. The next step will be maintaining that form against opponents capable of limiting his space and putting him under intense pressure.
Manchester City are preparing to visit Aston Villa on Saturday, giving Cherki another opportunity to confirm his importance to the team.
