Darwin Núñez Out of Liverpool? His Next Destination Could Be Italy
Darwin Núñez’s future at Liverpool appears to be increasingly uncertain. According to international reports, the Uruguayan striker has shown interest in joining Napoli, a club keen on signing him for the upcoming season. Although no official agreement has been reached, negotiations are ongoing, and the player has reportedly been convinced by the sporting project presented by coach Antonio Conte.

The 26-year-old forward, for whom Liverpool paid €85 million in 2022, hasn’t been able to meet expectations. Under both Jürgen Klopp and now Arne Slot, Núñez has struggled to find consistency. In the 2024/25 season, he made 47 appearances, scoring just 7 goals and providing 7 assists—numbers well below what was expected.
Liverpool reloads: Wirtz and Frimpong arrive from Leverkusen
While Darwin’s exit looms, Liverpool is actively strengthening its squad. The English club has just confirmed the signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a record fee of €135 million. The 22-year-old German playmaker has signed a contract through 2030, making him the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, surpassing Virgil van Dijk’s €90 million move in 2018.
In addition to Wirtz, new manager Arne Slot had already secured the signing of right-back Jeremie Frimpong, also from Leverkusen, for €35 million. The next signing to be finalized is Milos Kerkez, a left-back from Bournemouth, whose deal is all but done.
To help balance the books after these major investments, Liverpool has reduced its wage bill by offloading Trent Alexander-Arnold, who also brought in €10 million. Furthermore, Jarrell Quansah is expected to join Leverkusen in a transfer worth over €40 million.
With these moves, Liverpool aims to build a competitive squad to reclaim the Premier League title and go further in European competitions. Darwin Núñez’s departure could be a key piece in completing Slot’s new puzzle, as the club seeks a more efficient and tactically aligned roster. Will Italy be the next chapter in the Uruguayan striker’s career?
