Mikey Varas believes San Diego FC are on the right track despite their 10-match winless run, saying things will change if they can produce a complete performance against Austin FC.

San Diego's club-record winless run in all competitions stretched to double figures with Saturday's 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders (D4 L6).

Prior to this sequence, San Diego had never gone more than three straight games without a victory in all competitions.

That run has seen Varas' team tumble to 13th in the Western Conference ahead of hosting Austin, who are three places and one point better off. 

But he does not feel they are far away from a breakthrough result, saying: "We're building momentum, we need to take all the things that we're doing. 

"We're doing well in terms of playing with more tempo, with a consistent intensity, getting good pressure on the ball. 

"I think our pressing has been really good. We're starting to protect the space in behind better. We're managing the transition better, so you don't see as many big transitions conceded. 

"And now it's just about going there with that feeling that we can put it together for 90 plus, however many minutes, and that will be our intention. 

"Our intention will be to make sure we have a quick turnaround mindset right now, where we take the positives from this game, reflect on a few little details that we could do better, and we arrive ready to compete."

Austin, meanwhile, played out a 2-2 draw with Minnesota United last time out, having won back-to-back games against St. Louis City and the Houston Dynamo prior to that result.

San Diego FC – Anders Dreyer

Dreyer's 10 goal involvements (five goals, five assists) in 2025 are the joint-most of any San Diego player in MLS play (alongside Marcus Ingvartsen). 

Dreyer's 27 chances created are almost three times as many as any of his team-mates have laid on, too, with Amahl Pellegrino and Jeppe Tverskov creating 10 apiece. 

Austin FC – Myrto Uzuni 

Uzuni scored for the third straight game on Sunday, netting from the penalty spot. 

The only player with a longer run of games with a goal in Austin FC's MLS history was Sebastian Driussi, who scored in seven straight games in July and August 2022.

MATCH PREDICTION – SAN DIEGO FC WIN

San Diego and Austin split their meetings in 2025, with each team winning at home. 

Austin will be the sixth team San Diego has hosted twice in the regular season, and the Verde will look to avoid being the first team to lose twice at San Diego in league play.

And the Opta supercomputer is favouring San Diego to end their long wait for a win.

That is perhaps because Austin's are without a victory in their last nine regular-season road games following Sunday's draw at Minnesota. 

Austin have conceded multiple goals in all nine of those matches, and no team has conceded multiple goals in 10 straight on the road since the Chicago Fire in 2018-19 (11 straight).
