Lionel Messi Confident About 2026 World Cup: “It Will Be Something Extraordinary”
Inspired and optimistic. Lionel Messi spoke from Miami about the 2026 World Cup, calling it “extraordinary” and highlighting both the growth of soccer in the United States and his ongoing commitment to Inter Miami.
Messi’s Excitement for the 2026 World Cup
Lionel Messi expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, which will take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Speaking at the American Business Forum (ABF) in Miami, the Argentine star said he expects an “extraordinary” tournament that will be key to soccer’s continued growth in North America.
“I have very high expectations that the World Cup will be something extraordinary,” said the Inter Miami forward, praising the organization, stadiums, and passion of U.S. fans. For Messi, the event represents a historic opportunity to strengthen the sport in a country where soccer is steadily gaining ground among young players.
Messi’s Commitment to Soccer in Miami
The World Cup champion also highlighted the creation of the Messi Cup, a youth tournament to be held in December featuring eight of the world’s top academies in Miami. “There will be some great matches, with big teams coming from all over the world,” Messi said enthusiastically.
He also celebrated the progress on Inter Miami’s new stadium, which is set to open next year. “Renewing my contract goes hand in hand with how well things are going — how good things are for my family and being able to keep helping the club grow,” he added after extending his deal through 2028.

An Icon On and Off the Field
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has not only transformed the MLS but also become an emblematic figure for the city. During the forum, he received multiple standing ovations and was presented with the Key to the City of Miami by Mayor Francis Suárez.
Looking ahead, Messi envisions the 2026 World Cup as a turning point for soccer in the United States. And while the final — to be held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — will determine Argentina’s successor, the eternal captain continues to leave his mark both on and off the field.
