James Rodríguez Will Not Have a Leading Role in MLS With Minnesota United
Not every marquee signing is guaranteed 90 minutes. In Minnesota, a different plan may already be in motion for James.
A Signing That Sparks Internal Debate
The arrival of James Rodríguez at Minnesota United immediately generated buzz across MLS, but inside the club, there is already discussion about how to maximize his impact. Sporting director Manny Lagos made it clear that the Colombian is in strong physical condition, though his role may not be what many expected.
Delays involving work visa documentation disrupted the initial plan, yet excitement around the signing remains high. For Lagos, beyond the star power, the challenge lies in finding the right tactical fit within the system.
Starter or Super Sub?
While the executive believes James is ready to compete, he also acknowledged the reality of age. Now over 30, the Colombian no longer possesses the same physical range he had a decade ago. That has opened the door to a different possibility: using him as a “super sub” capable of shifting games off the bench.
Lagos mentioned he could operate as a right-sided winger drifting inside or as a second striker behind the main forward. A 4-4-2 setup with James playing underneath the striker — similar to his role with the Colombian national team — is also under consideration.

The Return of the True No. 10
For Minnesota’s sporting director, James remains a classic No. 10. A creative playmaker with vision, mid-range shooting ability, and the capacity to break defensive lines with precise passing. In a modern game where the traditional attacking midfielder has faded in prominence, Minnesota is betting on bringing that profile back to the center of the action.
That said, Lagos was realistic about the limitations. Pressing and defensive recovery are not James’ primary strengths. The key will be maximizing his offensive influence without overburdening him defensively.
A Move Also Designed With the World Cup in Mind
There is a broader context behind the signing. James Rodríguez is aiming to reach peak form ahead of the 2026 World Cup, and Minnesota offers a competitive environment to prepare for that stage. The club, meanwhile, hopes his presence will elevate the locker room and provide leadership.
Lagos even highlighted James’ relevance within the league, suggesting he is one of the biggest names in MLS — second only to Lionel Messi in overall impact.
Whether as a starter or a high-impact substitute, one thing is clear: Minnesota sees James as a major weapon. The only question is how prominently he will feature once the season unfolds.
