Beckham Becomes England’s First Billionaire Athlete
The 2026 edition of the Sunday Times Rich List revealed a historic milestone for British sports: David Beckham reached an estimated net worth of $1.6 billion, officially becoming the first English athlete connected to the sports world to surpass that figure.
The former English football star saw his wealth grow rapidly in recent years thanks to his investments and, especially, the global impact of Inter Miami following the arrival of Lionel Messi. Beckham is currently one of the club’s main shareholders, helping transform the MLS franchise from an emerging project into one of the most talked-about sports brands on the planet.
Within the list of Britain’s wealthiest figures, Beckham ranks just behind Bernie Ecclestone, the former head of Formula 1.
An Empire Built Beyond Football
The fortune is shared with his wife, Victoria Beckham, who has also built a successful business empire through her projects in fashion, music, and entertainment. Together, they have become one of the most influential and powerful celebrity couples in the United Kingdom.
In the sports world, the list also includes major names such as Anthony Joshua, with an estimated fortune close to $320 million; Rory McIlroy, two-time Masters champion, with approximately $325 million; Lewis Hamilton, worth around $435 million; and Tyson Fury, also near the $320 million mark.
However, Beckham became the first to break the billion-dollar barrier, setting a massive precedent for future generations of athletes.
Messi’s Arrival Changed Everything for Inter Miami
The English icon understood the commercial potential of his image from an early stage in his career. During his time with Manchester United and later Real Madrid, he was already involved in agreements tied to shirt sales and commercial rights linked to his personal brand.
In addition, his lifetime deal with Adidas remains one of the most valuable endorsement agreements in sports history.
Still, Beckham’s greatest business move may have been bringing Lionel Messi to Inter Miami. The signing of the Argentine superstar completely transformed the club and multiplied its revenue to historic levels.
The rise in broadcasting rights, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and international exposure turned Inter Miami into a global brand generating nearly $600 million annually.
David Beckham stopped being just a football legend a long time ago. Today, he is also one of the most successful sports businessmen in the world and the clearest example of how a career on the field can evolve into a global empire off of it.
