Marquinhos expects 'talking to' from Luis Enrique after Paris derby defeat
Paris Saint-Germain ended their Ligue 1 campaign with a defeat to Paris FC, and Marquinhos conceded they were not at their very best.
Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos said Luis Enrique would give his team a hard time after they ended their title-winning Ligue 1 campaign with a defeat to Paris FC.
Just 13 days before their Champions League final against Arsenal, PSG were beaten 2-1 by their city rivals on Sunday, thanks to Alimami Gory's late brace off the bench.
Bradley Barcola had given PSG a 50th-minute lead, but Gory hit back with two goals late on to drop them to their sixth league defeat of the season.
In fact, PSG lost after scoring the opening goal in Ligue 1 for the first time since May 12, 2024 against Toulouse, ending a stretch of 55 such games without defeat.
They also lost their first top-flight match against a newly promoted side since 31 January 2021 (2-3 at Lorient). Following their draw against Lorient earlier this month, it is the first time PSG have failed to win two consecutive league matches against promoted teams since January and February 2014.
And Paris FC were deserving victors, having registered an expected goals (xG) total of 2.13 from 17 shots to PSG's tally of 0.62 from nine attempts at Kevin Trapp's net.
But the champions will now turn their attention to defending their European crown, and Marquinhos believes preparations for that clash in Budapest will only intensify after their derby defeat.
"It's the end of the season with a lot of challenges still ahead for us, a Champions League final. It's one of the best things that can happen to us in a season," Marquinhos said.
"This is my third Champions League final here in Paris. I know how difficult it is. It's an exciting end to the season.
"And even though we didn't win today, we'll focus on the things we can improve. The coach will give us a bit of a talking to over these two weeks so we can improve for this final."
PSG have also attempted 10 shots or fewer in each of their last two Ligue 1 matches (10 v Lens, nine v Paris FC), the first time they have done so since January and February 2024 (also two matches).
Their lack of cutting edge in the final third was compounded in the 27th minute, when Ousmane Dembele was forced off with an injury and replaced by Goncalo Ramos, causing some concern ahead of the Champions League final.
Luis Enrique's side finished the Ligue 1 season with an average of 2.2 points per game. In the last 10 years, PSG have only recorded a lower average in a single campaign in 2020-21 (2.16, when they finished second).
This is also the second-lowest points-per-game average for a champion in that period, behind Lille in 2020-21, and Marquinhos conceded that improvements need to be made.
"We'll take the context with us, and everything we can learn from it, we'll take it with us. We'll grow and learn from this defeat," Marquinhos added.
"We didn't play the way we should have. We should have done better. Especially in the first half, we weren't at our best.
"We did manage to score in the second half, but we have to keep going. We have two weeks to properly prepare for this new objective we have set for ourselves."
Luis Enrique provided an update on Dembele's fitness, but did not give too much away regarding the severity of the forward's injury.
"Nothing to say about Ousmane. We'll see [on Monday]," he said. "I'm a bit disappointed with the match. I knew we had no objective. I expect much more from my players."
