Lyon Stumbles Against Nice and Falls Behind in Ligue 1 Title Race
Olympique Lyon lost momentum in the Ligue 1 title race after a 3-1 defeat to Nice, marking their second consecutive loss and leaving them two points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Nice Strikes Early and Punishes Lyon’s Mistakes
Olympique Lyon suffered a costly setback in their visit to Nice, who capitalized on their attacking efficiency to secure a 3-1 victory. Despite dominating possession, Jorge Maciel’s side failed to make the most of their chances and paid the price for their lack of precision.
The home team struck first just five minutes into the match, when Melvin Bard scored from close range after a well-placed assist from Sofiane Diop. Although Lyon responded at the half-hour mark with a goal from Pavel Sulc, the hosts quickly regained the lead. Once again, Diop found the back of the net in the 35th minute, this time finishing off a clever header from Jeremie Boga.
Despite pushing forward in the second half, Lyon struggled to maintain intensity and continued to waste key opportunities in front of goal.
A Missed Penalty That Changed the Game
The visitors had a golden chance to level the score through a penalty kick, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles failed to convert as Yehvann Diouf guessed correctly and made a crucial save. That miss proved decisive, deflating Lyon’s morale and shifting the momentum entirely toward the home side.
With thirty minutes remaining, Hicham Boudaoui sealed the win for Nice by scoring the team’s third goal. Although Sulc added a consolation goal in stoppage time to make it 3-2, it wasn’t enough to spark a comeback.
The defeat leaves Olympique Lyon struggling to regain form and losing ground in the title chase, while Nice continues its impressive climb up the table, proving they could be a genuine contender in the Ligue 1 title race.
