Luis Enrique unfazed by PSG losing Ligue 1 top spot ahead of Brest clash
Paris Saint-Germain are hoping to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 with a win against Brest, having slipped down to second last weekend.
Luis Enrique says he is "calm and confident" despite Paris Saint-Germain losing top spot in Ligue 1 to Marseille last weekend, with Brest up next in the top-flight.
PSG are one point behind Roberto De Zerbi's side with eight games played, after a 3-3 draw with Strasbourg, in which they launched an impressive comeback, opening the door for Marseille to leapfrog them.
Luis Enrique's team have already, seemingly, put that result behind them, thanks to a stunning 7-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday.
PSG are unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions, since a 1-0 loss to Marseille, and Luis Enrique remains unfazed ahead of their return to Ligue 1 action.
"As a coach, I am calm and confident because I saw the same thing," he said. "It's your job to analyse why you think it works or doesn't.
"You have to see each match in different contexts. We try to play the same way, but there are different circumstances, especially around each match.
"I saw the same mentality and the same identity in Ligue 1 as in the Champions League, the same as last season."
PSG are not top of Ligue 1 after eight matches for the second time in the last three seasons (third in 2023-24, second currently), having been so in each of the previous six.
Of the five times they have not been top at this stage of a season under QSI, the only time they failed to finish as champions was in 2016-17 (second behind Monaco).
"You are concerned because the team has one point less [than Marseille], I am not," the PSG boss added.
"As PSG coach, I don't worry about others. We are ready. We don't use the different circumstances we had as an excuse; we have to know how to manage that. That's what we do."
Brest, meanwhile, are 12th in the table with nine points, having won just two of their matches so far.
They are unbeaten in their last four matches (W2 D2), though their last win on that run did come back in late September.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brest – Junior Dina Ebimbe
Junior Dina Ebimbe will face PSG for the first time since leaving the club in the summer of 2022.
A scorer against Lorient on the last matchday, he has only been involved in a goal in two consecutive matches once before in 102 appearances in the big five European leagues, in November 2022 with Eintracht Frankfurt (one assist, then one goal).
Paris Saint-Germain – Ousmane Dembele
Ousmane Dembele has seven goals against Brest in all competitions (five in Ligue 1, two in the Champions League), his joint-highest career total against a single opponent (also seven against Monaco).
These seven goals were all scored in 2024-25, making it the highest tally of goals against a single opponent by a player in Europe's big five leagues since the start of last season.
MATCH PREDICTION: PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN WIN
Brest are winless in their last 32 matches against PSG in all competitions (D8 L24), since a 3-1 home victory in January 1985 in Ligue 1.
This is the joint-longest unbeaten run against an opponent in the history of PSG, who are also unbeaten in their last 32 games against Angers.
And Brest have lost each of their last eight home games against PSG in Ligue 1 and could establish the longest home losing streak by one club against another in the history of the top-flight.
PSG are heavy favourites to win on Saturday; however, they have not won either of their last two away games in Ligue 1 (0-1 at Marseille, 1-1 at Lille). They have not gone three such matches without success in the top-flight since February and March 2022.
Brest have conceded at least three goals in 14 different Ligue 1 matches since the start of last season, only Le Havre having more (15). PSG, meanwhile, are the team that has scored three or more goals most often during this period (22 times).
Eric Roy's side have a strong defensive base at home, though. Since the start of the 2023-24 season, Brest have kept 17 clean sheets at home in Ligue 1 (in 38 home games), the second-highest total behind Nice (18).
