Giroud Give Lille Stoppage-Time Win Over Monaco
Back in Ligue 1 after two years in the United States, veteran forward Olivier Giroud handed Lille their first victory of the season with a last-gasp goal, sealing a 1-0 win against Monaco.
At 38 years old, the Frenchman from Chambéry continues his love affair with scoring. After netting in the opening round against Brest, he struck again — this time in the 91st minute. Collecting a pass from Fernández Pardo on the right, Giroud beat goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky to send the crowd into celebration.
He could have added a second minutes later, but in the 96th minute he missed from the penalty spot, sending his effort over the bar.
Giroud’s strike not only marked Lille’s first win under coach Bruno Genesio, but also delivered Monaco their first defeat of the campaign. The principality side had won their opener against Le Havre, but faltered here.
Elsewhere in the standings, Lyon, Toulouse, PSG, and Strasbourg top the table with six points after the second round.
Monaco still await the contributions of Ansu Fati and Paul Pogba, both yet to be in shape to feature this season.
