Lyon defeated Auxerre 3-1 at home to move to the top of Ligue 1. Bacher, Athekame, and Nuamah scored for the hosts, who once again showed their strength at the start of the season.
Olympique Lyon made an important statement at the start of the Ligue 1 season by defeating Auxerre 3-1 and moving, at least for the moment, to the top of the standings. Paulo Fonseca's side took advantage of home-field advantage and showed the attacking efficiency needed to secure three points that keep them in the fight near the top of the table.
With seven points, the Lions sit atop the standings on goal difference, level with Lille, while they wait to see how the other teams competing near the top of the table fare.
Bacher and Athekame Put Lyon in Control
The first half made it clear that Lyon intended to take control of the match. Auxerre had its chances and even celebrated a goal that was later ruled out, but the home side was the one that managed to turn its opportunities into goals.
The breakthrough came from Felix Bacher, who rose to score with a header and put Lyon in front. The goal gave the hosts greater confidence and forced Auxerre to push forward in search of an equalizer.
Shortly afterward, Zachary Athekame extended Lyon's lead. His effort from the edge of the box beat goalkeeper Mamadou Diop and made it 2-0 at a moment when Lyon appeared to have the match under control.
However, Auxerre refused to back down. Cameron Archer capitalized on a dangerous attacking move to pull one back before halftime and bring uncertainty back into the contest. The 2-1 scoreline completely changed the outlook and left the door open for a potential comeback.
Ernest Nuamah Steps Up to Seal the Win
Lyon's response came early in the second half, with Ernest Nuamah taking center stage. The forward capitalized on a turnover forced by Pavel Sulc, received the ball inside the box, beat his marker, and fired home to restore Lyon's two-goal advantage.
The 3-1 goal proved decisive for Auxerre, who had managed to close the gap before halftime but could no longer find the same threat going forward or put the hosts under sustained pressure.
From that point on, Lyon managed its lead and made sure the match did not slip away. The hosts did not need to take unnecessary risks and handled the advantage intelligently through the final whistle.
Lyon Looks Up While Auxerre Finds Itself Under Pressure
The victory gives Lyon seven points and puts them at the top of Ligue 1 on goal difference. Fonseca's side shares first place with Lille, while Monaco is also among the teams that could reshape the picture at the top of the table.
The situation is completely different for Auxerre. The visitors remain without a point and sit in 18th place after suffering three consecutive defeats. The margin for error is already shrinking for a team that needs to turn things around quickly if it does not want to become trapped in the most dangerous part of the standings from the opening weeks of the season.
