Santiago Sosa named Argentina’s Best Player of 2025, ahead of World Cup winners
Racing Club captain Santiago Sosa was voted the Best Player in Argentina in 2025, according to a fan poll conducted by leading Argentine outlet Olé, finishing ahead of World Cup winners with the national team.
Capable of playing as a center-back, sweeper, or defensive midfielder, Sosa emerged as the top choice despite not being an attacking player. His leadership and consistency with La Academia earned him the top spot in a vote dominated by high-profile names.
Santiago Sosa finished ahead of Di María and Paredes
The former River Plate player claimed 40% of the vote, comfortably beating Leandro Paredes, who returned to Boca Juniors and received 29%, despite not winning silverware during the year.
Third place went to Santiago “Ruso” Ascacíbar with 18%, while Ángel Di María, now with Rosario Central and also a World Cup winner, surprisingly finished fourth with just 9%.

Who is Santiago Sosa, Argentina’s best player of 2025?
Santiago Sosa began his football journey at Club Mercedes, founded in 1875, the oldest football club in Argentina. He later completed his youth development at River Plate, making his first-team debut in 2018.
After playing 21 matches for River, he was sidelined and transferred to Atlanta United in MLS. Rather than fading away, Sosa returned stronger in 2024, showing maturity and leadership. Although he hoped for a return to River, he later admitted: “It hurt that River didn’t even answer the phone.”
That setback led him to Racing Club, where he found trust, continuity, and a central role. His performances were instrumental as Racing won the 2024 Copa Sudamericana and the 2025 Recopa Sudamericana, cementing Santiago Sosa’s status as the best player in Argentina in 2025.
That popular consensus inevitably raises the question: does he deserve a call-up to the Argentina national team? With six months to go until the 2026 World Cup in the United States, his current form makes it a serious consideration. A player who never gives up on a ball, versatile, intense, and reliable, with a level of performance that speaks for itself and undoubtedly positions him as a more than valid option for the Scaloneta.
