Is "El Virrey" Coming Back? Boca Juniors could bring back Carlos Bianchi as coach
Following Fernando Gago’s exit as manager of Boca Juniors, the name making the biggest waves among fans and media is none other than Carlos Bianchi. Multiple reports suggest that Juan Román Riquelme and the club’s Football Council are looking at several candidates, and topping that list is the club’s most successful coach ever — who could be in for one last, unexpected dance with the team he made legendary.
Even though no official talks have taken place yet, people close to the club say Riquelme is open to convincing Bianchi to take on a new role. At 76 and over a decade away from the sidelines, "El Virrey" might return in a more strategic position — likely leading a coaching staff rather than being the full-time head coach.
Fans split, other names on the table
The idea has Boca fans both excited and unsure. For many, bringing back Bianchi would be a way to relive the glory days, when he led Boca to a haul of domestic and international trophies. Others remember his last run between 2013 and 2014, which left more questions than answers, and think his time as manager is already over.
Meanwhile, the club is also looking at other names who’ve been more active lately, like Gabriel Milito and Gustavo Quinteros. Milito seems to be the frontrunner, thanks to his coaching style and current availability, although he hasn’t received an official offer yet. Quinteros is open to talks, but is seen as more of a backup option.
Regardless of the rumors, the potential return of Carlos Bianchi goes beyond tactics — it would be a symbolic, emotional move by Riquelme to leave his mark as club president, banking on a legendary figure during a tough time after Gago’s exit. A long shot, but not out of the question.
