The Dilemma Xabi Alonso Faces with Mastantuono at Real Madrid
Real Madrid is dealing with one of the few ongoing debates in Xabi Alonso’s project: who should occupy the right flank of the starting lineup. Despite the team’s brilliant start to the season and the strong performances of stars like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr., Jude Bellingham, and Arda Güler, the right wing remains an unresolved question. The injury to Franco Mastantuono has only deepened the uncertainty in a position where no one has managed to truly cement their place.
The young Argentine, who had started more than eight matches under Alonso’s management, is currently sidelined, reopening the discussion. Neither Rodrygo Goes, Endrick, Brahim Díaz, nor Federico Valverde have been able to make the position their own. Fifteen official games into the season, and the team still lacks a clear reference point on that side of the pitch.
A Vacant Right Flank
In major matches, Xabi Alonso has tried different solutions depending on the opponent. Bellingham was used against Atlético Madrid, Brahim against Juventus, and Camavinga against Barcelona and Liverpool. Yet, none of these experiments have brought lasting results.
The case of Rodrygo is particularly striking: the Brazilian, who has played the most minutes in that role, hasn’t scored an official goal for Real Madrid in eight months. His lack of productivity has raised alarms at Valdebebas. While his tactical work rate remains appreciated, Real Madrid’s attacking standards demand much more.

Meanwhile, Mastantuono is working on his recovery to return and fight for a position that, despite the rotation, remains unclaimed. His youth, flair, and ability to take on defenders make him one of the club’s most exciting prospects, though he will have to compete with more experienced and in-form players to earn his spot.
Arda Güler Steps Up and Earns Xabi Alonso’s Trust
The one player who seems to have seized his opportunity is Arda Güler. The Turkish midfielder has started the last four matches in October and has been instrumental in victories over Villarreal, Getafe, and Barcelona in LaLiga EA Sports, as well as standing out against Juventus in the Champions League.
“I have confidence. It’s very important for me that the coach trusts me,” said the midfielder after receiving the Mahou Five Star Player of the Month award. Güler admitted that he feels comfortable in Alonso’s system and that his goal is to “win every trophy by the end of the season.”
Ahead of the upcoming clash with Rayo Vallecano, the Turkish youngster is expected to start once again, a clear sign of his coach’s full confidence. Still, the issue remains unresolved: the right flank continues to lack a permanent owner, and the return of Mastantuono could reignite a battle that has become Xabi Alonso’s biggest tactical dilemma at Real Madrid.
