The French newspaper L’Équipe has dropped a true bombshell that could spark major controversy within the Real Madrid environment. According to the outlet, the club’s board is already considering the possibility of selling either Vinicius Jr. or Kylian Mbappé, as they believe the two do not fully fit together in the same team and that there may only be room for one as the leader of the project.
The idea of bringing together two world-class superstars was expected to turn Real Madrid into an unstoppable attacking machine. However, the partnership between Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé has never fully functioned as expected, especially from a tactical standpoint.
Both players are more comfortable operating from the left wing, attacking spaces from wide areas inward and having freedom to carry the ball. This leads them to constantly occupy the same zones, interfere with each other’s attacking movements, and ultimately reduce width and balance in Real Madrid’s offensive structure.
In addition, both require significant ball involvement to influence matches, which in several games has caused the team to lose fluidity and attacking clarity. When they operate too close together on the same flank, Real Madrid becomes more predictable and creates fewer spaces for the rest of the attackers.

This tactical situation is also compounded by internal issues that have surfaced in recent weeks, reportedly pushing the Real Madrid hierarchy to consider such a drastic and controversial decision.
In the case of Vinicius Jr., the Brazilian forward has yet to renew his contract. Although his intention is to remain at the club, negotiations have stalled due to salary disagreements. A potential sale would represent a massive financial boost for Real Madrid, and this summer could be the ideal moment to negotiate before risking a free departure later on.
On the other hand, Kylian Mbappé has also come under scrutiny from fans. In recent months, the French star has received heavy criticism on social media and was even whistled at during the most recent match at the Santiago Bernabéu, reflecting a degree of dissatisfaction among sections of the Real Madrid fanbase.
Mourinho as the leading candidate to take over the Real Madrid bench, and it would be the Portuguese manager who could have the final say on the future of both players.
José Mourinho has previously managed squads full of superstar personalities, so there is also the possibility that he attempts to adjust the tactical system to make Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappé complement each other more effectively.
