Endrick Furious After Losing Real Madrid’s No. 9 Shirt to Gonzalo García
He wanted the club’s most iconic number… but it was handed to someone else. Endrick dreamed of being Real Madrid’s new No. 9, but the chosen one was Gonzalo García. Was it just a tactical decision or a message sent straight from inside the locker room?
A painful decision
It’s not official yet, but all signs point to Gonzalo García being the next player to inherit Real Madrid’s legendary No. 9 shirt. Journalist Alberto Pereiro reported the news on Radio Marca, and also revealed Endrick’s visible frustration when he found out. “Endrick’s face in the locker room was far from happy,” he said. The Brazilian’s reaction wasn’t just emotional—it was another sign that he’s once again being pushed to the sidelines.
Endrick had hoped to establish himself this season. Despite limited minutes last year, his European debut was promising: 7 goals in 843 minutes. But an injury just before preseason changed everything. In his absence, Xabi Alonso gave Gonzalo a chance, and the academy graduate delivered big time at the Club World Cup, earning himself a spot in the squad… and the shirt number Endrick had also hoped for.
From bright prospect to fading opportunity
The hardest part for Endrick isn’t just losing the number—it’s watching his chances vanish before the season even begins. With Mbappé and now Gonzalo ahead of him, and Xabi Alonso yet to see him in action due to injury, the outlook is far from ideal. A loan move, including a potential switch to Real Sociedad, was proposed, but the Brazilian turned down every option. “Madrid wants him to go, but he keeps saying no. I think we’ll revisit this in January,” Pereiro added.
Unlike Gonzalo, Endrick is two years younger and still in development. But that age gap also places him further behind in the race for a first-team role. His return is expected around mid-September, and he’ll need to impress from day one to change the narrative.
The ‘Endrick case’ remains wide open
Despite his huge potential, the reality is that Endrick is being left without minutes… or a number. His competitive drive pushes him to fight for his place, but the club seems to be heading in a different direction. Should he accept a loan? Or is it just a matter of time before he explodes? The ball—and the decision—are at his feet.
