Atlético de Madrid Plans to Shield Julián Álvarez From Barcelona’s Interest
Atlético de Madrid is preparing for a new era of financial power and sporting ambition following the arrival of Apollo Sports Capital. One of the club’s top priorities is securing the future of its star forward, Julián Álvarez, who has reportedly caught the attention of FC Barcelona.
A New Financial Era for Los Colchoneros
The recent entry of the American investment giant Apollo Sports Capital as the majority shareholder of Atlético de Madrid marks a turning point in the club’s history. Managing assets worth over €900 billion, Apollo aims to strengthen the Spanish side’s presence among Europe’s football elite.
According to Cadena SER, the new leadership intends to make a major financial injection in the upcoming summer transfer window to consolidate the squad and protect its key players. Under the guidance of Mateu Alemany, recently appointed as the club’s sporting director, Atlético has begun laying the groundwork for a bold, long-term project focused on maintaining competitiveness both domestically and in Europe.
At the heart of that project is Julián Álvarez, the Argentine World Cup winner and team’s leading scorer this season with nine goals and four assists in 15 matches. Club executives reportedly view the forward as the cornerstone of their new sporting vision and have no plans to entertain offers for him, despite growing interest from Barcelona.
Keeping the Star in Red and White
While transfer speculation continues, Atlético de Madrid remains firm in its stance: Álvarez is not for sale. The striker is under contract until 2030 with a substantial release clause, giving the club strong leverage in any negotiation. Reports indicate Atlético will soon offer him an improved deal that would make him one of the team’s highest earners.
Speaking recently to L’Équipe, Álvarez addressed the rumors directly: “There’s a lot of talk about me and Barcelona in Spain. Last year there were also discussions with PSG, but nothing happened. For now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”
The club’s plans extend beyond Álvarez. Executives are also working to renew key contracts such as Giuliano Simeone, whose extension could run through 2030. The strategy includes strengthening the squad around Álvarez to ensure Atlético can consistently compete with Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, while remaining a contender in the UEFA Champions League.
Looking Ahead
With the financial muscle of Apollo Sports Capital, Atlético de Madrid is entering a new phase of growth and ambition. The club aims not only to lock down Julián Álvarez but also to pursue elite reinforcements capable of elevating its status on both domestic and international fronts.
Currently, Atlético sits fourth in LaLiga with 25 points—six behind league leaders Real Madrid—and remains in a solid position in the Champions League playoff race.
