Arbeloa Reshapes Real Madrid by Prioritizing Unity in the Locker Room
Despite mixed results, the coach has helped Real Madrid regain structure and confidence by reinforcing team unity and properly managing the squad’s key figures.
Just over a month into his tenure at Real Madrid, Álvaro Arbeloa has managed to shift the team’s overall dynamic. While the numbers remain debatable — with an early Copa del Rey exit against Albacete and an unexpected Champions League tie against Benfica — the team now looks more organized and competitive on the pitch.
In La Liga, Madrid remain unbeaten since his arrival. Without spectacular performances but with effective displays, they have secured solid wins over Rayo Vallecano, Valencia, and Real Sociedad, results that allowed them to reclaim the top spot in the standings. The improvement is particularly noticeable in the team’s defensive structure and collective cohesion.
One of Arbeloa’s smartest moves has been his handling of the dressing room. Unlike Xabi Alonso, who clashed early on with senior players, Arbeloa chose to embrace and support the squad’s leaders. From day one, he publicly backed figures such as Vinícius Júnior and Federico Valverde, both now enjoying strong runs of form. Vinícius has rediscovered his spark and attacking edge, while Valverde — even when deployed in different roles — has regained his influence.
The return of key players like Antonio Rüdiger and Trent Alexander-Arnold has also strengthened the team’s foundation. Greater width and defensive solidity have been essential during this period.
Combined with a sharper version of Vinícius, Mbappé’s consistency, and valuable contributions from supporting players, Madrid appear to have found balance. Arbeloa understands that protecting the locker room and reinforcing unity is the path toward competing for at least one of the two major titles still at stake this season.
